Course History
Tierra Verde Golf Club opened in 1998 as a municipal course owned by the City of Arlington, Texas. Designed by Gary Stephenson of Graham & Panks International—a firm founded by former US Open and PGA Champion David Graham and architect Gary Panks—the layout was carved from 250-280 acres of secluded terrain in southwest Arlington. Stephenson, who joined Graham & Panks as an associate designer in 1990 and later founded his own firm Gary Stephenson Design based near Dallas, incorporated environmental sensitivity from the outset through a partnership with Audubon International. The course became the first in Texas and the first municipal course worldwide to earn Audubon Signature Sanctuary certification, emphasizing wildlife habitat, water conservation, and integrated pest management. It has consistently ranked among DFW's top public courses, including No. 80 on the Dallas Morning News Top 100 in Texas and high marks from Avid Golfer Magazine.
In 2019, the course underwent greens resurfacing to Champion Dwarf Bermudagrass and complete bunker renovation using the Better Billy Bunker method, restoring greens to Stephenson's original design while improving playability. A similar project followed in 2022, again expanding greens, converting to Champion Dwarf Bermudagrass from TifEagle Bermuda, and rebuilding bunkers, overseen by city golf staff including Superintendent Mark Claburn. No previous names are documented; it has always operated as Tierra Verde Golf Club within Arlington's public system alongside courses like Texas Rangers Golf Club, Lake Arlington, and Meadowbrook Park.
The course has hosted two Byron Nelson Open qualifiers, three USGA Championship qualifiers, and numerous PGA and NTPGA events, underscoring its championship caliber.
