The Nelson Golf & Sports Club

Irving, TX Private2 courses · 36 holes79.1 / 100

Former host of the Byron Nelson — still thriving with a new golf shop, patio, and spectacular fitness facilities.

Our Review

Close to a decade since The Nelson and the TPC course hosted the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, the club is still thriving and making improvements. An overhaul of the golf shop and patio is nearing completion, improving the experience for members and Ritz-Carlton guests alike. The TPC Course remains a stern test with a memorable finish, though it may be time to reinvest in Cottonwood Valley. The fitness facilities are spectacular — bevy of classes, trainers, and activities to keep members fit for life. Great overall value for what they offer.

Course History

The Nelson Golf & Sports Club in Irving, Texas, comprises two championship courses originally developed as part of the Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas, which opened its golf facilities in 1983. The TPC Las Colinas course, a par-70 layout measuring 7,166 yards, was designed by Jay Morrish in 1982 with input from golf legend Byron Nelson and Ben Crenshaw, opening in 1983 as part of Las Colinas Sports Club. The adjacent Cottonwood Valley course, a par-71 stretching 7,120 yards featuring a signature Texas-shaped hole, was designed by Jay Morrish and Robert Trent Jones Jr. around 1982-1983 and updated in 2006. These courses hosted the PGA Tour's Byron Nelson Championship for 35 consecutive years: at Las Colinas Sports Club (1983–1985) and TPC Las Colinas (1986–2017), welcoming luminaries like Tiger Woods, Ben Crenshaw, and Payne Stewart during its tenure at the Four Seasons Resort, which changed hands multiple times before its 2022 acquisition by Century Golf Partners and HKI America. The club was subsequently renamed to honor Byron Nelson's legacy. TPC Las Colinas underwent significant redesigns, including a multi-million-dollar overhaul in 2008 led by Steve Wolfard of Weibring-Wolfard Golf Design Group—after consultation with original architect Morrish—and a $9 million renovation in 2011. Today, the private club continues to host events like the AJGA K.J. Choi Foundation Texas Junior Championship and the Texas Golf Association's Tournament of Champions.

The Courses

TPC Las Colinas Course

Architect: Jay Morrish (with Ben Crenshaw & Byron Nelson consultation)

Former host of the CJ Cup Byron Nelson through 2017. Still a stern test with a memorable finish — worth revisiting capital investment.

Cottonwood Valley Course

Architect: Jay Morrish & Robert Trent Jones Jr.

A longtime member favorite. Gentler, more parkland feel than the TPC side. May be time to reinvest capital per AvidGolfer.
