Course History
The Traditions Course at The Courses at Watters Creek in Plano, Texas, traces its origins to the Blackjack Course at Chase Oaks Golf Club, originally designed by Robert von Hagge and Bruce Devlin and opened in 1986. The Blackjack layout quickly gained acclaim, ranking as the top public course in Texas in 1991 according to the Dallas Morning News and hosting numerous corporate and charity events. Nestled amid woodlands and lakes on 250 acres straddling Plano and Allen, it became a staple of North Texas golf.
In 2012-2013, the facility underwent a major renovation and rebranding by the City of Allen into The Courses at Watters Creek, with the championship 18-hole Traditions Course serving as the centerpiece. Led by PGA Tour veteran D.A. Weibring and Steve Wolfard of Weibring-Wolfard Golf Design, the redesign reversed the hole routing, preserved signature holes like the scenic sixth, reshaped lakes and bunkers, extended the length by 400 yards to 7,015 from the tips, and introduced MiniVerde greens akin to those at TPC Sawgrass. The project opened on January 12, 2013, transforming the property into a 33-hole complex.
Complementing Traditions are the 9-hole Players Course (par-30 with multiple tees) and 6-hole Futures Course (short par-3s for short-game practice), all emphasizing accessibility for every skill level with up to seven tee options on many holes. Today, the public venue remains popular for its challenging yet playable parkland style, white-sand bunkers, and top-tier practice facilities, drawing locals and visitors year-round.
