Course History
The Club at Los Rios in Plano, Texas, known earlier as Los Rios Country Club, opened in 1971. It was designed by Don January, a Texas native, University of North Texas alumnus, and 1967 PGA Championship winner who later claimed 23 Senior PGA Tour victories, in collaboration with fellow PGA professional Billy Martindale. The pair, through their JanMart Enterprises, developed around 23 courses primarily in Texas, including notable DFW-area designs like Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas and Great Hills Country Club in Austin. The layout at Los Rios spans 6,507 yards as a par-71, featuring tree-lined fairways, generous Bermuda greens, eight ponds, and a meandering creek in play on 14 holes, emphasizing water hazards over bunkers. The semi-private public course underwent greens reconstruction around 2014 amid complaints of poor conditions in later years. In 2014, the City of Plano purchased the 194-acre property with Collin County grant assistance, leasing it back for continued operation until infrastructure like cart paths and signage was removed starting in 2020. The site has since been repurposed as Los Rios Park, with ongoing trail developments connecting to nearby greenbelts. It hosted a local Plano Senior Men's Golf Association tournament in 1995 but no major professional events or notable historical moments are documented.
