Course History
Tenison Park Golf Course - Glen opened in 1924 on 104 acres of land donated to the City of Dallas by Mr. and Mrs. E.O. Tenison in memory of their son. It became the city's first municipally owned golf course and marked the start of public golf access in Dallas, preceding the second course at Stevens Park by the same year. The course shares facilities with its sister layout, Tenison Highlands, as part of the Dallas Park and Recreation Department's municipal system. The original wood-frame clubhouse, built that year for $7,000 by park employees, was replaced by a stone structure in 1941 with partial Works Progress Administration funding.
The layout was designed by Fort Worth native Ralph Plummer, a Texas A&M graduate who began as a caddy at Glen Garden Country Club, turned pro in South Texas, and apprenticed under John Bredemus starting in 1927. After World War II, Plummer practiced architecture full-time, creating or reworking 86 courses including DFW-area standouts Northwood Club, Lakewood Country Club, Preston Trail Golf Club, and Colonial Country Club—three of which hosted U.S. Opens—as well as Champions Golf Club in Houston. The course has hosted the 1968 USGA Public Links Championship and served as an early proving ground for legends like Lee Trevino and Titanic Thompson. Bunker renovations occurred in 2008 and 2021, with a full driving range overhaul in 2011.
A 2021 Samuell-Grand Park master plan proposes reconfiguring the flood-prone, erosion-challenged layout into a shorter 9-hole or par-3 course to integrate with trails and a nature preserve, supported by a 2022 development agreement with the Dallas Golf Initiative. As of 2026, it remains an 18-hole par-72 track measuring over 6,600 yards.
