Course History
Sherrill Park Golf Course - Course No. 1 opened in 1973, designed by Leon Howard, a Texas native with a master's degree in soil physics from Texas A&M who created over 50 courses, many in Texas including other DFW-area layouts like Woodhaven Country Club in Fort Worth and the original routing at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton. The course is part of the City of Richardson's municipal system, named for the city's first manager R.B. Sherrill who oversaw massive growth from 1956 to 1973. In 1997, PGA Tour veteran and five-time winner D.A. Weibring, partnering with Design Resource Inc., led a full redesign that enhanced shot variety from tee to green; Weibring, an Illinois State alum with extensive DFW work like TPC Las Colinas renovations and Tenison Highlands, partnering later with Steve Wolfard of Weibring-Wolfard Golf Design, returned for further improvements in 2015. Course No. 1 complements Course No. 2, opened in 1976 with parallel design history. The facility hosts the annual City Championship, high school events, USGA and PGA qualifiers, and NTPGA Junior Championships under long-time head pro Ronny Glanton, a 2022 Texas Golf Hall of Fame inductee and 2020 PGA Golf Professional of the Year. No previous names or major professional tournaments are documented.
