Course History
The course at Rusted Rail Golf Club in Crandall, Texas, was designed by Dick Phelps, a Colorado-based architect who earned degrees in landscape architecture from Iowa State University in 1963 and served as president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects from 1980 to 1981. Known for creating user-friendly public courses across 15 states and Canada, with over 400 projects involving full designs, renovations, and expansions often in collaboration with his son Rick, Phelps emphasized golfer-friendly features like visible hazards and forgiving layouts. In the DFW area, he designed Firewheel Golf Park in Garland. The course opened in 1995 as Creekview Golf Club.[GolfPass](https://www.golfpass.com/travel-advisor/courses/2845-rusted-rail-golf-club)[ASGCA](https://asgca.org/architect/dphelps/)[TeeOff](https://www.teeoff.com/courses/1048294-rusted-rail-golf-course-details)
In July 2017, Brandon and Amy Barber purchased the declining facility, renaming it Rusted Rail Golf Club upon reopening in August 2018 following extensive renovations that included rebuilding 36 bunkers, installing new Champion Bermuda greens and an irrigation system, resurfacing cart paths, improving restroom facilities, and expanding the clubhouse to 17,000 square feet. These changes earned it the top spot on Golf Advisor's 2018 list of the 25 Most Improved U.S. Golf Courses. No major tournaments or notable members are documented.[Course Website](https://rustedrailgolf.com/golf-course/)[GolfPass](https://www.golfpass.com/travel-advisor/courses/2845-rusted-rail-golf-club)
