Course History
Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas opened in 1969, designed by J. Press Maxwell in collaboration with 1967 PGA Champion Don January and Billy Martindale, a fellow professional golfer and design partner. Press Maxwell, son of renowned architect Perry Maxwell who co-created Augusta National and Southern Hills, brought expertise from designing courses nationwide. January and Martindale, who had partnered in developing around 23 Texas-area layouts through JanMart Enterprises, shaped the course from a densely wooded landscape along White Rock Creek floodplain. The club has no recorded previous names or major ownership changes. The layout has undergone several renovations: Jay Morrish upgraded it in 1985, followed by enhancements from 1994 to 2000 by member and PGA Tour pro D.A. Weibring, a 2001-2002 project by Weibring-Wolfard Golf Design, a 2013-2014 refurbishment by Chet Williams, and a 2023 regrassing with Tahoma 31 bermudagrass plus irrigation modernization led by Williams. It has hosted the Texas Amateur in 1974 and 2010, Texas Mid-Amateur in 2015, Texas Senior Amateur in 2017, and numerous Northern Texas PGA Section Major Championships. Notable members include Scottie Scheffler, the two-time Masters champion and Olympic gold medalist who grew up playing there, and Justin Leonard, the 1997 Open Champion who also honed his game at the club under instructor Randy Smith.
