Course History
The Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club occupies the site of the former Shores Country Club, designed by Texas architect Ralph Plummer and opened in 1970. Plummer, a self-taught Fort Worth native who began as a caddie at Glen Garden Country Club, assisted John Bredemus on early projects like Colonial Country Club before designing around 100 courses, mostly in Texas. His DFW-area works include Preston Trail Golf Club, Great Southwest Golf Club, Dallas Athletic Club's Blue and Gold courses, and Ridglea Country Club's South Course, with three of his layouts—Colonial, Dallas Athletic Club, and Pecan Valley—hosting U.S. Opens. Known for working closely with the land on modest budgets, Plummer emphasized wind play, run-up greens, and natural features over excessive bunkering. After four decades, declining membership led to the Shores Country Club's closure on July 13, 2010. On July 13, 2012, new management revived it as the Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club, conducting a massive overhaul of the golf course designed by Jeffery D. Blume and swimming facilities while expanding tennis and family amenities to foster a more inclusive community. The original clubhouse, dating to the late 1970s, has seen multiple renovations, with major work started in summer 2025. The club has hosted USGA qualifiers including U.S. Amateur final qualifying, Texas Golf Association events like the Texas Four-Ball, PGA Korn Ferry Tour School qualifiers, collegiate tournaments, and high school competitions.
