Course History

Pecan Valley Golf Course in Fort Worth, Texas, originated as a municipal facility with land leased from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1962 near Benbrook Lake. Originally called Benbrook Golf Course, the first 18 holes of what became the River Course opened to the public on October 2, 1963, designed by Texas architect Ralph Plummer. Plummer, a self-taught Fort Worth native who began as a caddie at Glen Garden Country Club and assisted John Bredemus on projects like Colonial Country Club, created around 100 courses primarily in Texas over four decades. His DFW-area designs include Dallas Athletic Club's Blue and Gold courses, Preston Trail, Great Southwest, Ridglea Country Club South, Shady Oaks, and Squaw Creek. Nine more holes opened in July 1964, forming part of the initial 27-hole layout. The facility expanded to 36 holes during the 1981-1982 fiscal year through the Capital Improvement Program, adding the Hills Course's back nine designed by Dave Bennett, an ASGCA member since 1979 known for over 100 projects across North America including Prestonwood Country Club's Hills Course in Plano. The two courses are separated by the Clear Fork of the Trinity River. As part of Fort Worth's public golf system, the Hills Course plays about 150 yards shorter than the River Course. No major professional tournaments or notable historical moments beyond local charity events are documented for this course.
