Course History
Northwood Club was founded in 1946 by a group of Dallas businessmen on land previously owned by oilman Buddy Fogelson and actress Greer Garson. William H. Diddel, an Indianapolis native and prolific architect who designed over 75 courses primarily in the Midwest, was selected over Perry Maxwell to create the layout. A multisport college athlete at Wabash and five-time Indiana State Amateur champion, Diddel was a founding member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects and known for crafting challenging yet budget-conscious designs using natural terrain rather than excessive bunkers or mounds. The course opened in time to host the 1952 U.S. Open, won by Julius Boros, where local favorite Ben Hogan led after 36 holes but finished third, marking the first major championship in Texas.
The layout underwent a redesign in 1990 by Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf, followed by a comprehensive renovation led by Tripp Davis starting in 2015, which included updates to tees, greens, and bunkers, a new four-hole short course, and conversion to NorthBridge Bermudagrass; it reopened in 2018. Northwood has hosted various regional USGA events, North Texas PGA tournaments, and AJGA competitions but no other majors. No previous names or significant ownership changes are documented. The private club ranks among Texas' top courses and features additional tennis, pool, and family facilities.
