Course History
Luna Vista Golf Course, formerly L.B. Houston Golf Course, opened in 1969 after the City of Dallas purchased the land in 1963. According to official city records, the original 18-hole layout was designed by Donald Kleinschmidt, with construction completed entirely by city employees, converting Trinity River bottomland into playable terrain. Multiple golf sources attribute the design to Texas architects Leon Howard and Dave Bennett. Howard, a Texas A&M graduate with expertise in soil physics, specialized in Texas courses including DeCordova Bend Country Club and Lago Vista Golf Course. Bennett, an ASGCA Fellow, worked on DFW projects like Prestonwood Country Club. The course received a full-scale renovation in 2012 led by John Colligan and Trey Kemp of Colligan Golf Design, creating a 6,800-yard par-72 layout with new greens, fairways, tees, bunkers, irrigation, drainage, over 400 trees, and improved playability. The name change to Luna Vista clarified its location on Luna Road. As part of Dallas's municipal system, it supports community programs without major pro tournaments.
