Course History
Founded in 1912 by Collett Munger and George Aldredge, Lakewood Country Club became Dallas's second-oldest private club and second 18-hole golf course. Scottish-born architect Tom Bendelow, known as the "Johnny Appleseed of American Golf" for designing over 600 courses including Chicago Golf Club and Scioto Country Club, laid out the original routing on 129 acres at Abrams Road and Gaston Avenue. The layout persisted until Texas native Ralph Plummer, designer of more than 200 courses like Dallas National and Brook Hollow, overhauled it in 1947 with post-war improvements that endured for decades. The current clubhouse facing Gaston was built in 1959 following a fire at the original site on Junius, with an 1985 expansion adding 8,000 square feet.
