Our Review
Course History
The course was designed by Dick Phelps, a Colorado-based architect and ASGCA Fellow who graduated from Iowa State University with degrees in landscape architecture and has worked on over 400 projects across 15 states and Canada, often creating user-friendly public courses. Most of his work is in Colorado, but he also designed Firewheel Golf Park in Garland, Texas, within the DFW area. Development began in 1988 when Rostland Corporation donated floodplain land in North Richland Hills to the city after private developers failed. Construction, supervised by Recreational Services Limited, faced delays and a major flood in May 1989 that destroyed the site. The course finally opened in spring 1990, though some sources cite 1988. In 1997, a $1.2 million banquet center styled as a railroad depot was added.
