Course History
The course at Hackberry Creek Country Club in Irving, Texas, opened in 1985. It was co-designed by architect Joe Finger and golf legend Byron Nelson. Finger, a Texas Golf Hall of Famer from Houston, held a Rice University golf letter and a chemical engineering master's from MIT before designing 49 courses over 45 years, including DFW-area works like Las Colinas Country Club, Grapevine Municipal with Nelson and Dye, and Stonebriar Country Club. Note that the Texas Golf Hall of Fame exhibit lists Ken Dye as Finger's collaborator on Hackberry Creek (dated 1986). Nelson, with 52 PGA Tour wins, frequently consulted on designs in Texas. The layout follows the natural contours of Hackberry Creek in a parkland style within the Las Colinas planned community, near the site of the former family ranch developed by Ben Carpenter into the urban area. No previous names or major ownership changes beyond its current place in the Invited Clubs network are documented. The club has hosted USGA events including U.S. Open local qualifying in 2025 and U.S. Amateur qualifying in 1999, plus North Texas PGA and celebrity outings. Recent updates include mini verde greens and premium Arkansas white sand bunkers; no major course renovations are publicly detailed.
