Course History
The Grapevine Golf Course, a municipal facility in Grapevine, Texas, originally opened in 1979 with eighteen holes designed by legendary golfer Byron Nelson, a Waxahachie native with 52 PGA Tour victories including five majors, and Houston-based architect Joe Finger. Nelson, who retired from competitive play in 1946 to ranching while contributing to course design in Texas, collaborated on several regional projects. In 1999, the Bluebonnet Nine was added by D.A. Weibring's Irving firm Golf Resources, Inc., now Weibring-Wolfard Golf Design, bringing the total to 27 holes across Bluebonnet, Mockingbird, and Pecan nines. Weibring, an Illinois State alumnus, PGA Tour/Champions Tour veteran with 13 wins, and 2024 Texas Golf Hall of Fame inductee based in Frisco, Texas for over 45 years, has designed or renovated over 100 courses including DFW notables like TPC Las Colinas (former AT&T Byron Nelson host), Mira Vista Golf Club in Fort Worth, Sherrill Park in Richardson, and Cedar Crest in Dallas.
