Course History
Firewheel Golf Park in Garland, Texas, originated from city planners' 1981 visit to wildflower-covered farmland, naming the complex after native firewheels. Owned and operated by the City of Garland as its flagship municipal facility, the park spans 63 holes across three courses. The original Old Course opened in 1983, followed by the Lakes Course in 1987, both designed by Richard M. "Dick" Phelps, a prolific architect from Colorado Springs who graduated from Iowa State University and collaborated with his son Rick on over 400 projects emphasizing user-friendly designs without blind shots. Phelps, inducted into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame in 1998, brought his expertise back to Garland for the Lakes. The Bridges Course, the park's crown jewel with 27 holes including the Tradition nine (the shortest at 3,202 yards from the back tees), was established in 2001 and also attributed to Phelps in multiple course directories. No major course renovations are documented, though recent clubhouse updates occurred in 2024. The courses, particularly Bridges and Old, have regularly hosted qualifiers for the U.S. Open, U.S. Amateur, Byron Nelson, and PGA Tour events, drawing elite golfers and earning top rankings in Avid Golfer magazine. The complex has spurred local development, including the adjacent Firewheel Town Center.
