Course History
Firewheel Golf Park - Bridges Master Course forms part of the 27-hole Bridges Course at the municipal Firewheel Golf Park in Garland, Texas, owned and operated by the City of Garland. The complex originated in 1981 when city planners envisioned developing overgrown farmland named after native firewheel wildflowers. The Old Course opened in 1983, followed by the Lakes Course in 1987, with the Bridges added in 2001 as the crown jewel, featuring three distinct nines—Masters, Champion, and Tradition—that combine into varied 18-hole layouts such as Masters-Champion (par 72). The Bridges Master Course refers to one such combination including the Masters nine, the longest at 3,553 yards from the back tees.
The Bridges Course was designed by Richard M. Phelps, an ASGCA Fellow who graduated from Iowa State University in 1963 and has contributed to over 400 projects across 15 states and Canada, primarily public-accessible designs known for golfer-friendly features like upfront hazards without blind shots. Phelps, a Colorado Golf Hall of Fame inductee, lists Firewheel among his works, including other DFW-area contributions like the Old Course. No previous names or major renovations for the Bridges are documented, though the park has seen facility updates and the Old Course underwent irrigation and greens reconstruction in 2024-2025.
Firewheel's courses, including Bridges, have hosted USGA events such as U.S. Open qualifiers, U.S. Amateur qualifiers, PGA Tour Qualifying, and Byron Nelson Qualifiers, drawing elite players to Garland. The complex ranks highly in Avid Golfer magazine and serves as Texas's largest municipal golf facility with 63 holes total, spurring local development including housing and commercial centers.
