Course History
Cross Timbers Golf Course in Azle, Texas, opened in 1995 as a municipal facility owned by the city of Azle. The par-72 layout, stretching to 6,734 yards, was designed by Jeff Brauer, a prominent Texas-based architect who founded GolfScapes in Arlington in 1984 after starting his career in Chicago. A past president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, Brauer has designed over 50 courses, including several in the Dallas-Fort Worth area such as Tangle Ridge Golf Club in Grand Prairie, Ridgeview Ranch in Plano, and Cowboys Golf Club in Grapevine, as well as acclaimed layouts like The Quarry at Giant's Ridge in Minnesota and Wild Wing Plantation's Avocet Course in South Carolina. The course winds through hilly, wooded terrain near Ash Creek, featuring elevation changes, tree-lined fairways, pot bunkers, and water hazards that evoke a Hill Country feel. It served as the home course for Robert Landers, an Azle farmer who competed on the PGA Champions Tour in the mid-1990s. Cross Timbers has long supported amateur golf, hosting Texas Golf Association events including the 2022 Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play championship, won by Aaron Hickman, and the North Regional Four-Ball in 2026. Recent improvements focus on a major overhaul of practice facilities nearing completion in fall 2025, including an 11,000 square foot putting green, expanded driving range, short game area, and new bunkers.
