Course History
Cedar Crest Golf Course opened in 1919 as the golf course for the private Cedar Crest Country Club, designed by A. W. Tillinghast, a prolific Philadelphia-born architect who created over 250 courses including Winged Foot, Bethpage Black, and Baltusrol, with several in the Dallas area such as Brook Hollow Golf Club. Sol Dreyfuss laid out the club, which catered to affluent merchants in Dallas's Cedars neighborhood. The course hosted the inaugural Dallas Open in 1926, won by MacDonald Smith, and the 1927 PGA Championship, where Walter Hagen claimed victory after a teenage Byron Nelson lent him a cap during a pivotal moment. Charlie Sifford won the 1954 United Golf Association National Open there, and it also staged the USGA's first Public Links Tournament of the Southwest that year.
The country club folded during the Great Depression, leading the City of Dallas to purchase the property in 1946. Post-acquisition modifications included filling traps, widening fairways, and replacing the clubhouse, diminishing some original championship features, followed by a 1949 land expansion. In the late 1960s, Black pro James “JW” White managed the course, later succeeded by Leonard Jones. A new two-story pro shop opened in 2001, evoking the original clubhouse, and D. A. Weibring with Steve Wolfard renovated the layout in 2004, adding a practice range and lake. Today, the municipal course remains a public asset in Dallas's Parks Department, preserving Tillinghast's legacy affordably south of downtown.
