An A.W. Tillinghast masterpiece that continues to thrive as one of the most elite clubs in Dallas.

Our Review

Brook Hollow flexes its architectural muscles with a course design that is second to none. Conditions are otherworldly, and the routing offers some of the simplest yet most interesting design elements in the state. Additional tree management and upcoming native areas will return the layout closer to Tillinghast's original vision. No. 10 is arguably the best par 3 in Dallas, and the par 5 15th offers a look at a great hazard reminiscent of Pine Valley. The clubhouse is old-school from the outside, but the inside offers unmatched elegance and modern amenities. It is the total package.

Course History

Brook Hollow Golf Club opened in 1920 as one of Dallas's original courses, designed by A. W. Tillinghast, a prolific Golden Age architect known for championship venues like Winged Foot, Bethpage Black, and Baltusrol, as well as Cedar Crest in Dallas. Dallas businessman Cameron Buxton, a Philadelphia friend of Tillinghast and Pine Valley member, commissioned the layout on rural farmland overlooking a Trinity River branch, intending it as the Pine Valley of Texas; it featured the first complete fairway irrigation system. The club has maintained its private status without tee times, emphasizing walking golf with caddies.[Texas Golf Hall of Fame](https://www.texasgolfhof.org/exhibit/brook-hollow-golf-club)[Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brook_Hollow_Golf_Club)

The course underwent significant changes over decades, including Perry Maxwell reshaping square greens to round in 1940 and subtle revisions by Coore and Crenshaw in the early 1990s. In 2019, Keith Foster led a $20 million restoration to Tillinghast's original intent, clearing over 300 trees, restoring square greens, sand pits, bunkers with grass faces, and adding sub-air and hydronics systems under greens—one of fewer than ten U.S. courses with the latter—along with new irrigation and practice facilities; it reopened in 2020.[Golfadelphia](https://golfadelphia.com/2024/10/22/brook-hollow-golf-club/)[Texas CMAA Profile](https://www.texascmaa.org/files/Candidate%20Position%20Profile%20Head%20Golf%20Professional%20Brook%20Hollow%20Golf%20Club%20FINAL.pdf)

Brook Hollow has hosted major events, including the 1946 Dallas Invitational (won by Ben Hogan), U.S. Junior and Mid-Amateur, USGA qualifiers, Southern Amateur, Trans-Miss, and Texas state championships over nine decades. During World War II, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby played an exhibition for war bonds. Members include USGA champions, Walker Cup players, PGA Tour winners, and Texas Golf Hall of Fame inductees; the club earned induction in 2010 as a historic course.[Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brook_Hollow_Golf_Club)[Texas Golf Hall of Fame](https://www.texasgolfhof.org/exhibit/brook-hollow-golf-club)[Texas CMAA Profile](https://www.texascmaa.org/files/Candidate%20Position%20Profile%20Head%20Golf%20Professional%20Brook%20Hollow%20Golf%20Club%20FINAL.pdf)
